In order to understand why this can be so difficult it’s important to first understand exactly how signature loans work. Again, any signature loan is a loan is one in which the bank lends money to a borrower without requiring that borrow to support the loan with collateral (i.e. any type of asset that could be taken by the bank in case of default). Examples of loans that ARE NOT signature loans would be: home loans, home equity lines of credit, and car loans. Obviously, if the bank if going to take the risk to lend you money without any collateral backing the loan, you are going to need to be what banks call a ‘good credit risk’ in order for them to offer you the loan. Which is why they are generally not offered to people looking to take out a signature loan with bad credit.
Can You Get a Signature Loan if You Have a Bad Credit Score?
If you have a poor credit history, you still can find ways to secure a bad credit signature loan. However, you will not be able to do so by yourself nor with your credit alone. Really, the only way for you to get the loan will be to find a co-signer who has a good credit score. A co-signer is someone who is willing to sign their name next to yours on the loan documents, pledging that if you default they will pick up the loan payments for you. If you default, and they do not pay as well, then the bank will be able to go after both you and the co-signer for payments. How this helps you is that is effectively transforms you from a poor credit risk to a good credit risk in the eyes of the bank or lending institution. Again, this is the only way for you to get such a loan quickly.
Longer-term, if you find yourself with bad credit, you will want to find ways to fix your credit so you don’t have to rely on a co-signer in order to get a loan. While this process can be difficult, it’s important to start the process now, even if you do find someone willing to co-sign on your loan. In some cases, you will be able to remove the co-signer from the loan after you have fixed your credit, which will make them happy and is a good way to say thank you for helping you out in a tough situation.
